 Definition of Explanatory Text

Example of Explanatory Text

(General statement)

Lightning is a natural phenomenon that usually appears during the rainy season when the sky produces a momentary, blinding flash of light. A few moments later, followed by a roaring sound called thunder. This difference in appearance time is due to the difference between the speed of sound and the speed of light.

(Explanation)

Lightning occurs because of the potential difference between clouds and the earth or other clouds. The process of charge occurring on clouds is because they move continuously in a regular manner, and during their movement they will interact with other clouds so that negative charges will gather on one side (top or bottom), while positive charges gather on the opposite side.

If the potential difference between the cloud and the earth is large enough, there will be a release of negative charges (electrons) from the cloud to the earth or vice versa until balance is reached. In this discharge process, the medium through which the electrons travel is air. When the electrons are able to penetrate the air's insulating threshold, a sound explosion occurs.
